For this edition of Wild About Books Wednesday we're going to step into SkippyJon Jones' closet (a place where his imagination goes muy loco!) and trek down the desert road towards Mexico!
Today, I want to focus on a skill I often target using this book. Context clues. Spanish words are sprinkled in throughout this book, making it awesome for teaching students how to use context clues to figure out unknown words.
A few examples:
"Then they took a siesta. But after waking up, the Chimichangos got down to serious bees-ness."
-Students can use the context clues to figure out that siesta means "nap." This book is also great for teaching students how to use picture clues for figuring out unknown words too, as the band of chihauhaus are sleeping in the picture!
"The Bandito steals our frijoles!"
"Not your beans!" cried Skippito.
"Por que?" asked Skippito.
-Students can figure out that por que means "why?" in Spanish with a little scaffolding
Your students will have so much fun learning how to use context clues with SkippyJon. Using context clues is a critical skill for not only comprehension, but also for building vocabulary.
