I love using books in therapy! They're my favorite therapy tools. Today, I want to share some of my favorite snowman stories and how you can use them to target a variety of speech/language goals!

The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll
I just love Clayton and Desmond! The two little mice that star in the "Biggest Ever" series. In each book, they often start at odds with each other and by the end they start working together! There are a variety of ways to use this book in your speech room!
- Comparing/Contrasting: Students can work on comparing the the different snowmen in the story
- Problem/Solution
- Social Skills (friendship, working together)
- Describing
Sneezy The Snowman by Maureen Wright
This is such a fun book! Sneezy is a snowman, but he doesn't like being cold! There are a variety of goals you can tackle with this one!
- Cause/Effect: Sneezy often melts when he tries to warm up!
- /s/ blends: Your articulation students can scour the pages for /s/ blends! There are a ton! (ex. sneezy, snowman, smile, sneeze, snowflakes, etc)
- Sequencing: The children have to rebuild Sneezy over and over! Students can talk about the steps to building a snowman
- Rhyming
Snowman's Story by Will Hillenbrand
This is a beautiful wordless picture book! Wordless picture books are a treasure trove for language! The pictures tell a story of a rabbit that steals a snowman's story book! The snowman and his friends then chase the rabbit and go on a wintry adventure! There are so many uses for this book!
- Narrative Skills: Students can work on their narrative skills and tell their own story!
- Describing: The pictures are absolute beautiful and very detailed.
- Sequencing
- Story Elements
- Verbs
I'm a huge fan of Caralyn and Mark Buehner's Snowman series!
Snowmen At Night By Caralyn Buehner
This is a classic! A little boy begins to imagine what snowmen do at night! There are endless possibilities for therapy!
- Rhyming
- WH Questions
- Inferencing
- Verbs
I love this book so much that I even made a flip book and "how to" booklet to go with it! It can be found in January's Flipping for Literature packet!
Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner
This is one of my favorites! What if your Snowman could be with you all year? A little boy imagines all the things they would do (surf, go to amusement parks, etc)!
- Rhyming
- Hypothetical language (what if....)
- Text-to-self connections
- Sequencing: I made a free story map for this story a couple years ago!
Snowmen At Work by Caralyn Buehner
This is another fun book! Can you imagine if snowmen had jobs?! The ending if my favorite - there's a snowman in the oval office! haha! You can address:
- Community Helpers: This is great to use in a community helper unit and building vocabulary that will help answer many who questions!
- Who Questions
- /s/ blends
- Compare/Contrast: This book is great for comparing/contrasting different jobs.
Snowmen At Christmas by Caralyn Buehner
This is a wonderful book for December! I even made a book companion for it! It addresses multi-step directions, comprehension, pronouns, and much more! It's actually my most popular companion! You can find it HERE.
Snowmen At Play by Caralyn Buehner
This one isn't a storybook, but I thought I would mention it anyways! As of today, it's only $3.49 on Amazon. It's a little activity book with 50 stickers! I really wish the stickers were repositional, but they're not! You could probably squeeze 2-3 therapy sessions in using this workbook! There are a variety of activities such as mazes, crosswords, interactive scenes, find the difference pictures, how to create your own snowman activity, and others! A few possibilities for therapy:
- Multi-step directions: Give students directions on where to place the stickers
- Prepositions: Discuss where the stickers are and objects in the pictures.
- Comparing/Contrasting: There are two different pages with spotting the difference activities!
- Categories: There's a page where students have to find items that can be used in a snow-treat making party! Other categories you could address include winter sports, jobs, cold items, etc.
