Flora and the Flamingo (A Free Book Companion!)

It's Wild About Books Wednesday and I have something extra special to share with you! A FREE book companion. If you've stopped by my blog before then you know how much I love book companions! Books make the best therapy tools and I love expanding upon stories by using related activities. Today I want to introduce you to a book companion I designed to accompany the beautifully illustrated wordless picture book, Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle.

If you're not familiar with this book I highly recommend taking a quaint little trip to the library. It's definitely eye catching and well... very, very pink! It tells the story of a persistent young girl, Flora, who stumbles upon a flamingo. She starts to mimic all of the flamingo's moves, which highly annoys the flamingo! It's comical until the flamingo squawks at Flora and causes her to fall over. The flamingo has a change of heart and lends Flora a helping wing. You will love this unlikely duo and so will your students!

Wordless picture books house a world of possibilities! Here's a peek into the activities I created to use alongside this beautiful book:

Following Temporal Directions: I think this book is ideal for practicing directions! Flora is studying the flamingo and following its lead. Your students can draw these cute cards and follow the flamingos' directions! 18 cards includes.

Answering WH Questions: This book companion contains 12 question cards that relate to the story. These cards feature basic questions, as well as, higher level questions. These cards will surely spark a wonderful discussion about the book!

Describing: This worksheet contains two frames: one with Flora and one with the flamingo. Students cut out the descriptors on the bottom on the page and glue them by the character they describe. This activity also lends itself well to the Expanding Expression Tool (EET).

Articulation: Flora and the Flamingo is a MUST for students who are struggling with l-blends. It provides students with a wonderful opportunity to practice l-blends at the conversation level. This worksheet is designed to elicit a high number of repetitive drills! Students say each word 10-20 times, cut out the words, and then glue them around Flora and the Flamingo.
