Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

I absolutely adore Kevin Henkes! He is one of my favorite authors of picture books. In undergrad, I scored tickets to watch him speak at the University of Kentucky. He was awesome! Fun fact: While his children eat breakfast, he reads aloud from a chapter book. They keep a list of books they've read together in their kitchen. By now, I'm sure their list includes hundreds of chapter books!

Henkes' little mice often make their way into my speech room. I love Chester, Owen, Chrysanthemum, Wemberly, and especially Lilly! Today I want to focus on Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.

 

This is a comical story of a little mouse who LOVES school...... until her adored Mr.Slinger takes away her new purple, plastic purse! In his defense, Lilly was being disruptive haha

Kevin Henkes writes so wonderfully and uses many adjectives! I think this is a perfect book to use in a describing lesson or therapy session about describing. Lilly loves pointy pencils and squeaky chalk! Kevin Henkes makes mundane objects sound so interesting! Glittery glasses, shiny quarters, and a purple, plastic purse!

In therapy, you could bring in a purse and fill it with lots of cool objects. Pass the purse around and allow students to pull out a surprise and then they have to describe the object! Students would love it and it would be so much fun!

I also wanted to share a free product I've had sitting on my wishlist for a loong time! It's a craft pattern for Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse! I hope to download it and actually make time for it in therapy in the upcoming year. It's so cute!
