Mingo the Flamingo by Pete Oswald and Justin K. Thompson
When I say this book is precious, oh my, it's just so precious! Mingo is flying south for the first time and a huge storm separates him from his family! He lands on a farm (he's never seen one of those before) and he can't remember who he is! Although he's different and the farm animals aren't quite sure what to make of him, they welcome him with open arms. They also help him reunite with his family. It's such a heart-warming story! There are so many skills that you can target with this book:
- Problem/Solution: Talk about Mingo's problem and how it's solved!
- Compare/Contrast: Compare Mingo with farm animals!
- Social Skills: Kindness, how to be a good friend, etc
Sylvie by Jennifer Sattler
This little story is an absolute gem! Sylvie is a curious little flamingo and she asks her mom why they're pink. Her mother tells her it's because of the little pink shrimp that they eat (fun fact: it's true!). Sylvie then goes around and tries a wide variety of foods and turns herself different colors. Of course, this gives her a belly ache but also makes her want to be herself again.
- Inferencing: This book is PERFECT for practicing inferencing! On each page Sylvie spies a new food. Students can talk about what color Slyvie will become next. They can check to see if they're right by turning the page!
- Color Vocabulary or Describing: This is the perfect book for students that are learning color vocabulary. It's also great for teaching students how to describe using color vocabulary!
- Cause/Effect
Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle
This is one of my favorite wordless picture books! Flora starts to mimic a beautiful flamingo, much to his dismay. As the story goes on, the flamingo starts to lighten up a little bit and grows fond of Flora. By the end, they are the best of friends! You can use this book for:
- Predictions
- Describing
- I also made a free book companion four years ago (wow, time flies!)! It addresses following directions, /l/ blends, and more!
If I Knew a Flamingo by Karen Sutula
This is a gorgeous book. The author wonders where a flamingo goes a night. She imagines that she visits her friends - armadillo, puma, tapir, and a spider monkey. This is a cute book to address:
- Inferencing: If students have the background knowledge, they could infer that this flamingo lives in a rainforest.
- Categories: At the end of the story, the author informs us that flamingoes live on every continent (except for Antartica). You can also imagine that this Flamingo lives in other places too. Examples: "What if the flamingo lived in a zoo/farm/etc, who would she visit" or "What if the flamingo lived in Africa, who would she visit?" This would be a fun way to talk about animal categories!
- Describing
Miss Mingo Series by Jamie Harper
Miss Mingo's class is full of a wide variety of students - pandas, alligators, frogs, hippos, pelicans, and more! If you have any students that love animals, they'll love these books! She even has a cockroach as a student! haha
These books are great for targeting:
- Story Elements
- Describing: I love these books for describing. There are so many different animals and if you look closely at the illustrations there are usually fun facts given about each animal. For instance, a cricket's ears are located on their legs! Who knew!
- Social Skills: These books are also great to talk about behavioral expectations at school!
