There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell!

Welcome back to Wild About Books Wednesday! Books are my favorite therapy tools and I'm always looking for new books and ideas. The Old Lady will be making one more appearance in my speech room before the end of the school year. She will help me kick off summer vacation by swallowing a shell!

I have many students who have never been to the beach, so this book is perfect for building a little world knowledge about the ocean! It is bursting with beach vocabulary. As I've mentioned before, these books are also perfect for targeting retelling and sequencing. If you have students with those types of goals The Old Lady series by Lucille Colandro will be perfect for them. Recently, I snagged all of the books at Half Price Books for around $3.00 a piece! An absolute steal!

First up, I designed two retelling activities. Students will feed granny cards as they retell the story and then they can also retell the story using a sequencing map. Typically, I have one student hold granny while another student retells the story by feeding granny the cards. I think this is a great way for each student to not only retell the story, but also hear a peer model. While those two students are busy, another student is putting the events in order on the sequencing map. If you have more than three students in a group... you can print off more sequencing maps, have a student re-read the book, or provide them with another activity from this companion! My students always have to be engaged in something. Time is too precious to just "wait" for a turn.

Of course, I always have to tie in following directions into my book companions. I have so many students who are working on directions and I like to get everything I can out of a book! This book is a perfect companion for teaching children time concepts (first, then, before, after, etc), so I created a card game that addresses temporal directions. It includes 24 cards! Students draw a card and then they read or the SLP reads the direction. If they follow it correctly they get to keep the card. Student with the most cards wins! But watch out for granny - she's hungry!

I know I say this book is perfect for targeting nearly every goal I mention, but it really is! This book is also loaded with rhyming words! So it's also great for therapy sessions that are focused on rhyming. I created a bingo game that contains rhyming words from the book. Simply ask a student to find a word that rhymes with the given prompt and they look for a rhyming match on their bingo board.

Put A Shell On It! In this activity students place shells on a sand bucket according to the preposition printed on the shell.

I also created some no-prep articulation activities! They are color, cut, and glue sheets. Just print n' go! There are two sheets for initial /sh/ and two sheets for final /sh/.

I love print and go activities! So I created two more: one for irregular plurals and another for irregular past tense.

These sheets are perfect for therapy activities or to give as homework!
