Today I want to talk about one of my favorite professional books - Strategies that Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement by Stephnaie Harvey & Anne Goudvis.

 I recently referred  to this book in my post Cloudy with a Chance of Comprehension.

This book contains almost 60 lesson ideas that teach a wide variety of comprehension strategies! You can read it cover to cover and remained engaged or just flip to whatever chapter you need, when you need it. It's a fabulous resource. 

In many classrooms, the adults ask most of the questions. We are always trying to get an answer. As a speech-language pathologist, I ask a bazillion questions in a day! I realize, however, that one way to support comprehension is teaching kids how to ask questions. I don't think I work on this nearly enough. Chapter 8 in this book is entitled "Questioning: The Strategy That Propels Readers Forward." It outlines many ways in which to get students to question before, during, and after they read.

Questioning is truly a critical skill. While it bolsters comprehension, it is also a very unique way to assess comprehension. A child's questions upon finishing a reading assignment gives you insight into their level of comprehension.

I just can't think of a better way to instill a joy of learning in kids than to teach them how to wonder.
