Diary of a Worm (Plus Freebie!)

It's Wild About Books Wednesday! I love using books in therapy, they're wonderful springboards for almost every skill! If you're a blogger and want to share your own book ideas just link back to me using the picture below. I'd love to see you join my linky party!! I can never have enough ideas for how to use books.
Today I'm talking about a very unique and fun book - Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin.
This is a comical book that chronicles the daily life of a witty little worm. There are so many language skills that can be addressed using this book. Here are some ideas:

1. Inferencing: There are so many opportunities to hone the skill of making inferences in this book! Seriously, on nearly every page! For instance, on May 8th worm has a nightmare about giant birds playing hopscotch. Why is this a nightmare? Students must infer to truly understand.

2. Narrative Knowledge: This book is perfect for focusing on characters, because well... there's only one main character! Students can really get to know worm and develop a firm grasp on what a character is in a story.

3. Writing/Perspective: All the diary entries are written from worm's perspective making it a perfect book to address this. Students can even write their own diary entry as if they are worm! I have developed two sheets that can be used to assess students' writing and perspective-taking abilities. One sheet is geared towards emerging writers who may need to draw pictures and another sheet has lines for students who are writing in sentences.
If you are interested in using these sheets you can download them from my google drive HERE. All clip art for this freebie is from Creative Clips by Krista Wallden.

Please stop by next Wednesday too! I'm debuting a new book companion that I'm super excited about! :)
