The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond
I have to start with my absolute favorite! This is such an endearing story! There are so many ways to use it to address language!
- Inferencing: Cornelia sets out to make four different valentines. Have students infer who is getting the valentine! For instance, she makes one heart with holes in it... hmm what kind of animal will be receiving it?
- Sequencing: You can talk about how to make a valentine and how to mail a letter!
I've also made a book companion that addresses a ton of skills, such as comprehension, multistep directions, and prepositions!
The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll
Desmond and Clayton are back! They're two friends that always try to compete with each other and by the end of each story they come together! You can use it to work on:
- Social Skills: good choices vs. bad choices
- Problem/Solution
- Character Traits
The Night Before Valentine's Day by Natasha Wing
I love Natasha Wing's series! I use these "Night Before" books all the time! They follow a predictable pattern which is great for students that struggle with comprehension. This book is great for:
- Describing: The pictures are precious!
- Vocabulary
- Rhyming

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli
This is truly a must-have book! I'm not even going to lie... I cried the first time I read it! It's just so unbelievably sweet! It's about a solemn, quiet, and lonely man who receives a gift from a secret admirer! Use it to address:
- Social Skills
- Story Elements

Froggy's First Kiss by Jonathan London!
I adore Froggy and this is perhaps my favorite Froggy tale of all! It's great for teaching perspective taking and more! Check out my past blog post for more ideas!
The Littlest Valentine by Brandi Dougherty
"The Littlest" series is very precious and the Valentine's edition is no exception! These stories always feature a character that is very little and then they do something very helpful or great! Never underestimate anyone. :)
- Synonyms: little, tiny, small
- Emotions
- WH questions
Love Monster and the Last Chocolate by Rachel Bright
You gotta love the Love Monster! Love Monster comes home and finds a box of chocolates at his door! He mulls over whether or not he should share with his friends! It's such a cute story with a surprise ending!
- Compare/Contrast: It would be so fun to bring in a box of chocolates and compare/contrast them!
- Social Skills: Qualities of a good friend and sharing!
- Describing
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose by Lucille Colandro
What is a book round-up without an old lady appearance?! This book series is perfect for language therapy, because it's predictable and fun!
- Sequencing
- Predicting
- Valentine's Day Vocabulary
