In the Tall, Tall Grass Freebie!

Happy Wild About Books Wednesday! Spring is only a few weeks away and today I'm going to be talking about one of my favorite bug books!

In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming is one of my favorite books to incorporate into spring and summer speech therapy! A little boy peeks into the grass and sees a whole new world!

This book is a wonderful tool to enhance speech and language skills. You can use it to work on:
1. Rhyming - every page features rhyming words!
2. Vocabulary - There are so many insects and animals that appear in the tall, tall grass! From caterpillars to bunnies to bats!
3. Compare/Contrast - compare all the different animals!
4. Verbs - everyone animal is doing something different! You can talk about all the actions words! For instance, the ants pull and tug!
5. Synonyms/Shades of Meaning - Quite a few of the pages feature synonyms! Pull/Tug, Slip/Slide, Crunch/Munch, etc
6. Describing - describe all the animals in the grass!

Each set of cards features an animal that appears in the book and the rhyming words that are found with that animal! For instance, on the caterpillar page there are the words "crunch" and "munch." These cards are also self-checking, because the matches have identical animals on them. There are so many ways you can play!

1. Mix up all the cards and turn them upside down. Students can play a classic memory game!
2. Students can retell the story using the cards! First the caterpillars munch and then the hummingbirds sip!
3. Work on verbs! Put the cards upside down in a pile. Students have to draw a card and then act out the action! This would be a fun way to build vocabulary and make the words memorable!
4. Bring the story to life! Use a baby bottle drying rack that looks like grass and put all the cards in the grass! Students have to peek in the grass and find the matches!
