March Literature Flip Books

Wow, can you believe that March is around the corner?! A new month means new literature flip books! I love using interactive flip book companions, because they're hands-on and fun! They truly make each book memorable!

Let's check out the books for March's Flipping for Literature!

Spring is my absolute favorite part of the year! This month's books definitely signal a change in seasons!

First, let's talk about the two St. Patrick's Day themed books!

That's What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting

This book follows three wee little leprechauns as they journey towards a rainbow! They have a pot of gold to dig up and place at the end of it. There's no time to waste... except they just can't help but to get off track and pull a few pranks! This is such a wonderful story to read aloud during March! There are many skills you can target such as cause/effect (they pull quite a few pranks!), describing, and sequencing!

Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola

This book is a hoot! Jamie is the laziest man in all of Ireland. He doesn't want to farm the potatoes and prepare for winter. When he's lucky enough to catch a leprechaun, he gets tricked! Instead of taking the gold, the leprechaun gives him a seed for the world's largest potato! Maybe it wasn't a bad deal after all?

You can use this book to work on problem solving, describing, sequencing, and more!

Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin

Doreen Cronin is one of my favorite children's book authors! She's just so witty! This book is written in a diary format and chronicles the day to day life of a worm! I just love it! It's a wonderful book for a spring read aloud.

This is a great book to work on comparing/contrasting, as students can compare their day to the worm's day! You can also use it for sequencing, when questions, and more!

Hi! Fly Guy! by Tedd Arnold

Tedd Arnold is everything! His Fly Guy series is simply amazing. I have several of these books and they're always a hit in my therapy sessions! They're comical, witty, and fun! Buzz is on the hunt for a pet. The stars align when he meets a fly that says "Buzz." haha!

I love using this book for inferencing. For instance, when Buzz sets out on his mission to find a pet he is equipped with nets, cages, traps, fishing poles, bait, jar, and more! Talk about each item and what they think Buzz is trying to catch with it!

A Color of His Own By Leo Lionni

This book is just darling! A little chameleon is sad, because he doesn't have a color of his own. His color changes all the time. This story follows the chameleon throughout the year and in the spring he meets someone just like him! They decide to stay together so that they can always be alike. I just adore the message of this story! Everyone is unique and we have to learn to love ourselves.

This is a wonderful book to work on color vocabulary and describing! It's also great for time concepts, because it follows chameleon through a variety of seasons!

In addition to the flip books shown above, each book also comes with an additional booklet that can be created! I'll edit this post before March to show you the booklets!

They're so many different ways to utilize these flip book companions! If you're a speech-language pathologist, you can work on completing these over the course of multiple therapy sessions. This will allow you to truly dive into a story and build comprehension. Students will love leaving speech with these cool flip books!

If you're a classroom teacher, here are a few ideas:
- Read the story aloud and then place the flip book into a literacy center (maybe work on writing or a special center for reading responses!)
- Add these flip books into an interactive reading/language notebook
- A Friday treat! One teacher shared that she uses these flip books every Friday as "treat." I just love that idea!
- Whole group lesson
- Small group lesson
- Partner Activity - Students can listen to the books being read aloud on YouTube and then complete the flip book and booklets together!
- Listening Center - Students can listen to the books (on youtube, a recording, or perhaps Bookflix) and then complete the activities.
