Leaf Books for Fall Speech Therapy!

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year! I love scarecrows, falling leaves, and pumpkin-flavored everything! Since the first day of fall is around the corner, I decided to round-up some of my favorite leaf-themed books for you!

We're Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger
This book is perfect for speech-langauge therapy! It follows the general outline of the classic - We're Going on a Bear Hunt! Three children go hunting for colorful leaves and along they way, they encounter a few obstacles - a mountain, a waterfall, a lake, etc! Each time they find a new leaf, we also learn about a new kind of tree (hickory, maple, birch, etc)! It's packed full of language opportunities. You can use this book to target:
1. Prepositions - They can go under the mountain, so they have to go over it!
2. Adjectives - This book is packed with descriptive words! Colorful leaves, cold lake, tall mountain, etc
3. Sequencing - I love this book for sequencing and retelling! At the end, the kids have to retrace their steps!

Leaves by David Ezra Stein
This is a new book in my collection! I'm already in love with it! First, the artwork is gorgeous. It's about a baby bear cub that experiences autumn for the first time! He's confused that the leaves are starting to fall and is worried about the trees. He even tries to help the trees by attempting to put the leaves back on their branches! So, so, sweet! Baby bear grows sleepy and eventually finds a hole and fills it with leaves and goes to sleep. When he wakes back up...... it's spring! He's so happy to see that the leaves are beginning to grow back. Beyond precious! Use this book to tackle:
1. Time concepts - This book beautifully illustrates the changing of the seasons!
2. Problem solving - Baby Bear was very logical! He saw the leaves were falling and tried to put them back on! haha
3. Sequencing - This ties into time concepts, but it's a great way to practice sequencing the seasons! It's also a great book to work on retelling! First, the leaves fell and then baby bear got sleepy. He then fell asleep, it snowed, and then he woke up in the springtime!

When the Leaf Blew In by Steve Metzger
This is one of my all-time favorite books to use in autumn! It's so much fun and it feels like it was written just for speech-language therapy! There are so many different goals you can address! It takes place on a farm and one day a leaf blows in and a cow sneezes! This sets off a hilarious chain of events! It causes a spider to land on the owl and that causes the owl to swoop out of the barn... and it goes on and on! haha
1. Cause/Effect - This book is perfect for teaching cause/effect!
2. Action words - hopped, buzzed, swooped, etc. The animals perform all sorts of actions!
3. Past tense - All of the verbs are in past tense, which makes it the perfect mentor text for teaching that skill!

I love this book so much, I wrote all about it a few years ago! Check it out HERE and scoop up a free story retelling booklet too!

Mouse's First Fall by Lauren Thompson
This is such a fun and simple book! One fall day, two mice go outside to play in the leaves! They watch the leaves tumble and fall! They also compare the different leaves - some are skinny, some are pointy, some are smooth! It's great to work on:
1. Describing - yellow leaves, orange leaves, pointy leaves, etc
2. Verbs - The mice run, skip, kick, and swish! There are so many actions that take place in this book!  It would be so fun to grab some fake leaves at a craft store and then have students act out some of the things that occur in the book!
3. Compare/Contrast - You can talk about how the leaves are alike and how they're different!

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Colandro
The Old Lady is last, but certainly not least! There is an Old Lady book for nearly all occasions! I love these silly books and they're always a big hit with children! This time, the Old Lady swallows some leaves and other fun fall items! I love the repetitive nature of this book! You can use it to work on:
1. Sequencing - This book is highly repetitive, which is great for working on sequencing and retelling!
2. Fall vocabulary - She swallows leaves, a pumpkin, hay, and all sorts of things! At the end, a scarecrow pops out!
3. What questions - This is such a wonderful book to practice what questions. What did she swallow?
4. Before/After concepts - This series is one of my favorite resources for teaching before and after! Practice answering questions like "what did she swallow after the leaves?" or "what did she swallow before the pumpkin?"

I also created a book companion for this years ago! Check it out here!
